Musical AI and Beatoven.ai to launch the ‘first fully licensed’ AI music generator

The world can thrillingly anticipate the arrival of what’s being marketed as the ‘first fully licensed, rightsholder-compensating, generative AI platform,’ according to Musical AI, a company specializing in AI training content licensing and attribution.

A synergy between two ‘Fairly Trained’ AI companies

The new innovative AI generator is a result of collaborative efforts between Musical AI and Beatoven.ai, a company known for offering AI-powered, royalty-free music for content creators. While Musical AI will oversee data licensing, attribution of outputs, and compensation to the rightsholders, Beatoven.ai will supply the underlying technology on which the platform will be built.

The generator, scheduled for release in the second half of 2025, is being trained on a robust catalog of over 3 million songs, loops, samples, and sounds. Once launched, the tool will be exclusively offered as a white-label service — a product or service produced by one company and rebranded by others, primarily marketers — for Musical AI’s enterprise clients.

As both companies emphasized, the platform will be “completely legal and licensed,” meaning that all rights holders will be compensated for each use of their repertoire. Revenue shares will be distributed to copyright holders based on model usage.

Beatoven.ai, already used by over 1 million creators to generate more than 1.5 million tracks, has previously positioned itself as “one of the first AI music generators” to claim the Fairly Trained badge.

This certification, established by the former Stability AI executive Ed Newton-Rex, aims to verify and validate AI models and tools that respect creators’ rights. Alongside Beatoven.ai and Musical AI, other AI companies, like Lemonaide, Soundful, Tuney, and AI sound wellness company Endel, have also received this certification.

We are working with the forward-thinking, ethically driven team at Beatoven.ai because they see the value in proving that generative AI can be legal and can compensate original content creators for their work while still thriving as a business,” said in a statement, Sean Power, CEO of Musical AI.

The founder and CEO of Bethoven.ai, Mansoor Rahimat Khan, echoed the sentiment, expressing hope that the partnership will “set the way forward for how business models need to be built in AI with the rightsholders being compensated for the data the models are trained on.”

The project led by the two AI companies is the latest in a growing movement to develop licensed AI music-generating platforms. For example, Meta’s MusicGen, an AI text-to-music generator, can turn text prompts like “upbeat pop music with a catchy melody” into new 12-second music clips using licensed copyrighted tracks.

The legality of AI-generated music remains a widely debated topic in the music industry, with critics expressing concerns over the unauthorized use of copyrighted music and the unethical reproduction of artists’ voices (which we’ve also covered in our previous article on the rise of voice cloning). However, slow progress is already being made to address these challenges.

For instance, in September this year, GEMA, Germany’s performing rights collection society and licensing body, introduced a licensing model for AI developers, striving to ensure that copyrighted music is being used legally in AI training and AI-generated music creation.

Hopefully, the innovation blooming from the collaboration between Musical AI and Beatoven.ai will signal a significant step forward in establishing a framework for ethical, licensed AI-generated music that will show respect towards artists and creators.
