Deezer and SACEM Introduce Artist-Centric Payment Model in France

Deezer is expanding its efforts to better compensate working artist. With the rollout of its artist-centric model in partnership with the French performance rights organization SACEM, it aims to enhance rewards for artists while improving the experience of listeners.

Deezer launches artist-centric model in France

Last year, Spotify introduced a new model aimed at prioritizing ‘hard-working’ artists, reducing payouts to noise content creators, and approaching fraud cases and AI-generated content more strictly. Deezer took a similar approach in 2023 by launching an artist-centric model for recorded music in collaboration with Universal Music “to better reward artists while also enhancing the fan experience.” This way, the companies aimed to “develop an economic model that better reflects the true value of artist-fan relationships.”

Now, Deezer has announced that it is expanding its artist-centric model within the scope of a partnership with the French performance rights organization SACEM by implementing the system in France. In an official press release, the CEO of the streaming platform explains: “At Deezer, we continuously innovate for the benefit of the music ecosystem, and we are thrilled to partner with SACEM to introduce the world’s first update to the remuneration model for publishing in the streaming era. (...) Our model ensures that a higher share of what subscribers pay goes to the artists they love, while also counteracting fraudulent streaming behavior. Through this partnership, we are pleased to offer these key benefits to songwriters, composers, and publishers represented by SACEM.”

Deezer and SACEM believe that “this evolution will inspire other players in the music industry to follow suit, creating a more sustainable and equitable ecosystem for all creators.”

What does Deezer’s artist-centric model entail?

Deezer's Artist Centric Payment System intends to reward actively engaged, consistent artists and improve fairness in royalty distribution. It features a user-centric cap to ensure subscribers' payments are better allocated to the artists they listen to.

Artists with at least 1,000 streams from 500 different users each month receive double the payout per stream. This approach also intends to reduce fraud, which Deezer is tackling through song removals. Deletions also impact noise content and inactive tracks, which improves both artist earnings and the user experience. However, this approach also takes away from the experience and earnings of new artists who may not have built a larger listening base yet.
