What’s a YouTube Topic Channel?

A YouTube Topic channel is an auto-generated channel created by YouTube to organize and host music distributed via aggregators like iMusician. Here’s everything you need to know about Topic channels:

What Are Topic Channels?

When we distribute your music to YouTube, it is made available both on YouTube Music and YouTube’s video platform. The assets being distributed by us are called Art Tracks. Art Tracks are automatically linked to channels generated by YouTube, called Topic channels:

  • Initially, your release (Single, EP, or Album) will be linked to a Release - Topic channel created specifically for that release.
  • Once your Art Tracks gain enough traffic, YouTube will create an Artist - Topic channel, which groups all the releases attributed to your artist name. If your music ends up on another artist’s channel by mistake, don’t worry—we can fix this!

How Can I Gain More Control Over My Topic Channel Content?

Once an Artist - Topic channel is created for you, you can request an Official Artist Channel (OAC). This channel merges your personal YouTube channel with your Artist - Topic channel, consolidating all your content in one place. An OAC allows you to:

  • Showcase your Art Tracks and personal uploads together.
  • Gain more control over your branding and channel presence.
  • Provide a centralized hub for your fans.

Can I Customize a Topic Channel?

Unfortunately, Topic channels cannot be customized, and you cannot log into them like a personal channel. The only way to manage the content hosted on these channels is to request an Official Artist Channel. YouTube Topic channels are good for showcasing your distributed music, but they are limited in customization and access.

What’s the Difference Between a Topic Channel and a Personal Channel?

  • Topic Channels:
    • They’re automatically generated by YouTube.
    • They host Art Tracks distributed via an aggregator.
    • They cannot be customized or accessed like a personal channel.
  • Personal Channels:
    • They’re created and managed by you.
    • That’s where you can upload your own content, such as music videos, lyric videos, and behind-the-scenes content.
    • They’re fully customizable and they give you more control over your brand.
