What is Beatport?

Beatport is a digital music platform and download store that revolves exclusively around electronic music. It is a niche platform with a professional audience that consists of DJs, labels, artists, and individuals who are passionate about electronic music.

Launched in 2004, Beatport initially focused on a select number of genres. Over time, it expanded its catalog to cover the full spectrum of electronic music styles, including house, techno, drum & bass, dubstep, minimal, trance, and more. Today, it is considered one of the leading platforms for electronic music.

Beatport’s mission is to “provide world-class products and services that help DJs and producers at all stages of their career to elevate their craft.” Focusing on innovation and inspiration, it aims to “define the progression of DJ culture around the world.”

In addition to digital music sales, Beatport offers music streaming options and features like curated charts, exclusive releases, and DJ charts. Moreover, DJs can integrate their performance software like rekordbox, Serato, and Traktor with Beatport Streaming. It also runs Beatport LINK, a subscription service that allows DJs to stream tracks directly into their DJ software or hardware.

Beatport is a great platform for electronic music artists and labels who want to increase their visibility and reach an engaged audience of DJs and electronic music fans. Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of Beatport for Artists & Labels!

How to Claim Your Beatport for Artists Profile

Claiming a Beatport for Artists profile is an essential step in your promotional efforts on the platform. A verified artist page gives you more credibility and provides fans with accurate, relevant information about you and your releases.

To claim your Beatport for Artists Profile, your music must be available on the platform. This means you need to upload at least one track via an official distributor like iMusician to get started.

Once your music is live, head to beatport.com and sign in to your account. Go to the "Artist/Promoter" section and click "Claim Your Artist Profile." You’ll be asked to find your artist name and provide information that verifies your identity (or the identity or an authorized representative) and showcases your efforts. Since Beatport prioritizes verified and professional artists, this step has to be taken seriously.

After submitting your claim, the Beatport team will review your request and verify your artist profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, you cannot upload your music directly to Beatport without going through a distributor.

If you're an artist, you'll need to work with a distributor like us to get your music online. If you're a label, you also need to go through a distributor to submit your releases.

Since Beatport pays close attention to accuracy, it prefers to let music distributors handle the technical, legal, and administrative aspects of getting your music online to make sure your tracks meet its requirements and comply with copyright and metadata standards.

Once your music is available on the platform, you can claim your Beatport artist profile or label page and start building your presence on the platform.

There are two main ways for artists and labels to make money on Beatport.

Beatport is primarily known as a music downloading site. Track prices on the platform typically range from $1.29 to $2.49, depending on the release type and exclusivity. Beatport usually keeps around 40–50% of the money, with the remaining 50–60% going to the label or distributor and then to the artist.

That said, you can also earn revenue through streaming. Beatport pays an average of $0.108 per stream on its main platform and around $0.178 per stream on Beatsource, its open-format service. On Beatport LINK, its DJ-focused streaming platform, you can earn around $0.058 per stream.

At that rate, you would need:

  • Around 93 streams on Beatport’s general streaming platform to earn $10

  • Around 56 streams on Beatsource to earn $10

  • Around 173 streams on Beatport LINK to earn $10

Keep in mind that the exact amount you receive depends on your agreement with your distributor. For this reason, it is important to choose a distributor that is transparent and doesn’t have any hidden commissions. Similarly, if you're signed to a label, your contract will determine the cut it will take before passing earnings to you.

Since Beatport does not let artists and labels make changes to their profiles on their own, any updates will need to be requested manually via Beatport’s artist profile update form or label profile update form.

When requesting an update, make sure you’re providing the correct information and including everything that’s important at the right time, so you don’t have to go through the process again a few days or weeks later.

Beatport is the leading platform for electronic music, covering a broad range of genres. It’s widely used by DJs around the world, making it a must for artists and labels working within the electronic scene.

Traxsource may be smaller, but it has a dedicated niche community, making it a great option for those looking to build closer relationships with their audience. Additionally, it places a stronger emphasis on house music, although it is not limited to that genre.

Both platforms offer editorial support, charts, and high-quality downloads. Which one is better depends on your music and goals. Beatport offers broader exposure, while Traxsource may be a slightly better fit for house-focused artists.

Despite the differences, many artists choose to upload their music to both platforms to make sure they reach fans where they listen. We recommend getting your music on both platforms and are happy to help you out.
