With December 3rd here, Spotify Wrapped 2025 has officially been released. What can music fans learn about their listening habits and global music trends this year? Let’s find out together!

The Journey of Spotify Wrapped

Spotify Wrapped was first launched in 2015, originally called “Year in Music.” While personalized, that year’s summary offered users basic data such as top artists, songs, and total minutes listened. It was not the shiny and interactive presentation we see today.

The feature was rebranded as “Wrapped” the following year, slowly evolving from simple stats to a story-like, shareable experience that got integrated directly into the Spotify app in 2019. It’s worth noting that the Wrapped story, bit-sized format was created by Spotify’s intern, Jewel Ham, who presented the idea at the end of her intern project.

As it turned out, the 2019 version only tapped the surface of the potential hiding in Wrapped for Spotify. Ever since then, every year, the streaming platform comes with new, gamified features (alongside some lasting staple data categories) to give music fans insight into how good of listeners they are and what the music they listen to says about them.

In 2019, Spotify created a public and personalized decade-specific experience to mark the end of the decade. In 2020, Wrapped expanded to include podcast listening habits and digital badges for Premium users.

In 2022, users could learn how their listening mood typically changed throughout the day and were assigned to one of 16 listening personalities, which was basically a personality test based on one’s music choices, habits, and taste. The feature would tackle questions like “Do you mostly listen to the same artists over and over again, or do you prefer exploring new music?” or “Do you like listening to mostly popular artists, or do you rather look deeper for someone less well known?”

Wrapped 2023 delved even deeper into the link between music listening and personality, replacing “Your Listening Personality” with “Me in 2023,” connecting each user to one of 12 unique characters. Fans interested in exploring a variety of genres were called Masterminds, while those whose top artist made up more than a third of their listening time were called Fanatics. Oh, and there were also Hypnotists, who like to play an album all the way through, or Vampires – fans, who would listen to emotional, atmospheric music more than most.

Even more exciting that year was a feature called “Sound Town,” which connected every user to a town where people shared their music tastes. Fans around the world enjoyed seeing where others listened to similar artists and genres. Was it somewhere miles away? Or was it the town where they live?

Spotify Wrapped 2024 sparked a lot of surprisingly negative discussion about the campaign. As we mentioned in our article on Spotify Wrapped Controversy, many Spotify users felt let down by the categories. Some popular ones, like Top Genres and Top Albums, were left out, while the new categories didn't generate much excitement. The highlight of the recap was likely the “Music Evolution” feature, which showed users how their listening habits and traits changed over the year. However, music phases turned into odd terms like Pink Pilates Princess Strut Pop or Vampire Pilates Princess Rock April that didn’t really resonate with fans.

Moreover, users criticized Spotify’s increased focus on AI integration. Last year, the platform launched an exclusive AI podcast that summarized each listener’s 2024 music journey, created in collaboration with Google’s NotebookLM. This personalized Audio Overview was meant to provide deeper insight into the year's top songs, artists, and genres – but the AI nature of it made it feel “robotic” and “soulless” according to many. Some data also seemed incorrect.

Still, from an engagement perspective, Wrapped 2024 was a success for Spotify, and we believe it’s unlikely that the disappointment over that recap left such a bitter taste in users ' mouths that they wouldn’t be eager to see what this year’s data shows.

Speaking of which – what has the 2025 Wrapped actually delivered? Let’s take a look!

2025 Personalized Insights in a Nutshell

What’s New in Spotify Wrapped 2025

  • “Visual Mixtape” design overhaul

  • New Listening Age category

  • New Clubs category with listener roles

  • Return of Top Albums & Top Genres after being removed in 2024

  • Listening Archive (AI-generated special days)

  • Wrapped Party (new multiplayer experience)

  • More flexible, swipe-controlled navigation in the story

Design That Leans into “Visual Mixtape”

Before diving into the data, it’s worth looking at this year’s Wrapped design, because that’s where the first notable shift appears. Compared with previous years, which were high on vibrant colours and shininess, Wrapped 2025 focuses on a reduced color palette, bold imagery, gradients, and tactile textures.

With its “visual mixtape” aesthetic, the design gives off old-school, nostalgic, almost retro vibes, blending analogue-inspired visuals with modern digital polish. The more human, sentimental direction marks a noticeable departure from its classic look – especially from last year’s experience, which leaned toward glossy, AI-generated sheen.

According to Jeremy Wirth, Spotify’s Global Executive Creative Director, the visuals aim to capture the “tension between chaos and clarity.”

Every gradient and texture reflects that unpredictable mix of emotion and rhythm that makes listening so personal. It’s our most expressive Wrapped yet, and I love that it feels stripped down with the reduced color palette and bold use of images to feel simple and super modern,” he explained.

Listening Habits Categories of 2025

Now, onto the data itself. In its press releases, Spotify claims that this year’s Wrapped is more up-to-date, dynamic, personal, and “unmistakably you” than ever, bringing back some fan-favorite categories while introducing new ones (as users now expect each year).

Wrapped starts with a summary of how much time a user spent listening on the platform. As Spotify emphasizes, listening in Private Mode and using features like Exclude from Taste Profile still count toward total listening time, but these streams are not included in taste-based stories. From there, users see Top Genres (with the total amount of genres one has listened to), Top Albums, Top Songs, and Top Artists.

The top songs and artists sections are especially interactive this year. Users are prompted to guess their favorite song (out of five options) and watch their top 5 artists “compete” with one another throughout the year – eventually revealing which one has won the race for the most-played artist. Wrapped also highlights Top Podcasts and Top Audiobook Genres.

Spotify Wrapped: Top Genres

Maybe you’ve come across Cut’s article titled, “Spotify Just Called You Old.” It refers to the new Listening Age category, based on the idea of a “reminiscence bump,” which essentially “suggests” your musical age based on when the music you listened to most often was originally released. This means that someone who listens mainly to new releases might have a listening age of 20, while someone who spends the year deep in the 1960s music might land at 60 or 70. As Spotify notes: “Age is just a number. So don’t take it personally.”

Spotify Wrapped: Listening Age

A second new category is called Clubs and should represent the emotional qualities and characteristics of the music one listened to most, including mood, genres, and other musical attributes. Each track you stream is tagged with descriptors based on the user playlist titles it appears in. These descriptors feed into six possible Clubs, with listeners assigned to the one with their highest stream score. Additionally, within each club, users receive a role that reflects their listening behavior and performance relative to the rest of the Club. For instance, you might be a Scout, mainly seeking out new releases, or a Specialist, defined by exploring more experimental sounds.

Spotify Wrapped: Clubs

For listeners who have had more than 20 days of significant streaming and at least 2 “special days,” Wrapped also unlocks the Listening Archive, a unique AI-generated report of special moments throughout the year. These include Your Biggest Discovery Day, Your Biggest Listening Day, and Most Nostalgic Day.

Finally, Spotify strives to level up the social experience with Wrapped Party, a new interactive feature that lets users invite up to 9 friends and compete with them in a listening showdown. Participants can see who streamed the most minutes, who discovered the rarest listen, who explored the most new artists this year, who was most obsessed with their top artist, and even which friend they’re most (or least) musically compatible with.

Spotify Global Trends in 2025

Every year, Wrapped doesn’t just provide personalized listening insights to every user – it also highlights the most-streamed artists, songs, albums, as well as podcasts and audiobooks across the globe.

Top Artists and Albums

Spotify’s Global Top Artist of the year 2025 was crowned Bad Bunny, who previously claimed the title in 2020, 2021, and 2022. This year alone, his music has amassed 19.8 billion streams. His success extends to the Global Top Album category as well, where he took first place with DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS. To celebrate his achievements, Spotify partnered with Stillz and A1 Productions to create a short film, Leap Year, following Bad Bunny’s character Sapo Concho and highlighting how DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS has helped carry Puerto Rico’s sound around the world.

In the Global Top Artist ranking, Bad Bunny is followed by Taylor Swift (who topped the charts in the US), The Weeknd, Drake, and Billie Eilish.

Meanwhile, in the Global Top Album list, he was followed by:

  • KPop Demon Hunters (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film)

  • Billie Eilish’s HIT ME HARD AND SOFT

  • SZA’s SOS Deluxe: Lana

  • Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet, which, along with Eilish’s album, returns to the top five for the second year in a row.

Top Songs

As far as songs go, the Top Song Globally in 2025 is “Die With A Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, earning 1.7 billion streams. It is followed by:

  • BIRDS OF A FEATHER” by Billie Eilish

  • APT” by ROSÉ and Bruno Mars

  • Alex Warren’s “Ordinary

  • Bad Bunny’s “DtMF

Top Podcasts

The Top Global Podcast winner was none other than The Joe Rogan Experience, dominating the category for the sixth consecutive year. Rogan was followed by The Diary Of A CEO with Steven Bartlett and The Mel Robbins Podcast in second and third place, respectively. This Past Weekend w/Theo Von took fifth place, with Call Her Daddy surpassing it in fourth place.

Top Audiobooks

Finally, the world of audiobooks was dominated by the genre of romantasy, with authors Rebeca Yarros and Sarah J. Maas, each securing two of the top 5 spots globally.

User Reactions & Public Reception

After the lukewarm – some would say outright chilly – response to Spotify Wrapped 2024, the platform is likely relieved to see that the initial reception to this year's edition has been largely positive. Within the first 24 hours, the prevailing sentiment across social media platforms and community forums has been quite clear: Wrapped 2025 is a major improvement over the last year. This has been driven mostly by the return of highly requested categories, such as Top Albums. However, the newly introduced features, Clubs and Listening Age, have also been well received.

Many users have described this year’s experience as more engaging, interactive, and cohesive, praising Spotify for dialing back its AI-first approach prevailing in 2024. This shift has been frequently hailed as a significant contributor to the improved user experience.

I like how they included the number of streams under each song in the playlist this year,” says one Reddit user. “Ok this year's Wrapped is so cool. Like the animations are minimalistic yet fun, we got fun reports and stats AND top albums too,” says another.

As always, the Wrapped remains a highly shareable event on social media – which is the main focus of the campaign – dominating Instagram, TikTok, and X. Many users continue to eagerly take part in the annual tradition of sharing their top artists, genres, albums, and total minutes listened.

Many people have been having fun with the Listening Age. For instance, Icelandic singer-songwriter Laufey shared on Instagram that her listening age was 85, while American musician Grimes revealed hers was an impressive 92 (despite three of her top songs being by Gen Z singer Addison Rae).

Meanwhile, Wrapped Party has quickly become one of the breakout features of the year, taking over TikTok as users compare scores, team up with friends, and experiment with the new collaborative format.

Spotify Wrapped 2025: Final Thoughts

One might definitely say that Spotify Wrapped 2025 feels like a return to form. After the overly AI-driven and somewhat chaotic 2024 recap, this year focuses more on human emotion, nostalgia, and the personal stories behind listening. With new categories like Listening Age and Clubs, plus the interactive Wrapped Party, Spotify seems intent on making Wrapped even more social, more sentimental, and ultimately more fun. In the end, Wrapped continues to evolve not just as a data recap, but as a cultural moment — one that sparks conversation, creativity, and community every year.
