What Is Considered As Explicit Content?

When distributing music on multiple platforms, it's essential to label your content correctly. Explicit content refers to lyrics or themes that may be offensive or unsuitable for children and it’s a requirement to indicate this when you place your order.

Criteria for Explicit Content

A song is considered explicit if it includes:

  1. Strong Language: Any offensive or vulgar words.
  2. Violence or Abuse: Mentions of physical or mental harm.
  3. Sexual References: Any content related to sexual behavior.
  4. Discriminatory Language: Hate speech or discriminatory terms.

Why Labeling Explicit Content Matters

  • Platform Compliance: Improper labeling can result in your music being hidden or removed from certain stores.
  • Parental Controls: Platforms use these labels to help parents block explicit content from younger listeners.
  • Album Labeling: If one track is explicit, the whole album will often be flagged as explicit.
  • Artwork: Including a "Parental Advisory" logo will automatically mark all tracks as explicit.

Even if you don’t flag your music, platforms are able to recognize explicit material through algorithms. If your content isn’t marked but contains explicit elements, it will still be flagged automatically. Labeling explicit content is crucial for compliance, distribution, and protecting listeners. Make sure to label your content properly to avoid issues with your release.
