My Artist Name Is Already Used by Someone Else. Will This Be an Issue?
If you distribute your music using a name that's already taken by other artists, the different streaming platforms will encounter some issues when mapping your release to the corresponding artist profile. Your release may end up on someone else's profile or it may even be blocked if your name is too similar to another established artist.
It's really important that you make sure the artist name you choose is unique enough before submitting your order!
Research Your Name Before Distributing
Before committing to an artist name, make sure it’s not already being used or trademarked by another artist. This step is essential to avoid any legal complication and/or mapping confusion on the stores. A generic name will almost always lead to your music being mistakenly attributed to another artist, which will negatively affect your visibility and brand.
Problems on Streaming Platforms
If your artist name is already being used by another artist, streaming platforms will make mistakes and associate your releases to this other artist. This can dilute your brand and make it difficult for listeners to find you. Once your release goes live, changing your artist name is complicated, so it's really important that you choose wisely from the start!
Using an ISNI Code
Having an ISNI code (International Standard Name Identifier) can help platforms associate your music with the correct profile, however it's not as efficient as using an original artist name. You can apply for one through the ISNI website.
