Why iMusician?

What is Tidal?

TIDAL is a Norwegian-American company that describes itself as an “artist-first, fan-centered music streaming platform that delivers over 110 million songs in HiFi sound quality to the global music community.” It was launched in 2014 and began to draw attention after its developer, Aspiro, was purchased by rapper Jay-Z.

In the past, TIDAL was partly owned by several high-profile artists, including Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Beyoncé, which helped the platform gain further popularity. Today, it is primarily owned by Block, Inc. (formerly Square), which acquired a majority stake in 2021.

In 2017, TIDAL partnered with British company MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) to deliver lossless, high-fidelity audio in the highest possible resolution to its HiFi Plus subscribers, helping solidify its reputation among listeners who care deeply about sound quality.

TIDAL is also known for offering music videos, live concert streams, curated playlists, exclusive content, and editorial features that highlight artists, their music, and pop culture news. Other popular tools include advanced music discovery features and the option to integrate TIDAL’s library with select DJ software.

Why Upload Music to TIDAL

TIDAL may not be the biggest streaming platform in terms of users, but it offers unique advantages that make it a valuable space for independent artists.

One of the main reasons many artists want to get their music on TIDAL is its focus on audio quality. It’s a great platform for those who put care into production details and want their music to be available in high sound quality.

TIDAL is also known for offering higher per-stream payouts than some other platforms, which makes it appealing to artists looking to earn from their music.

Another benefit of TIDAL is its platform TIDAL for Artists, where musicians can manage their profiles, pitch their releases, and build a presence. Together with its exclusive artist features, live performance content, curated playlists, and interviews, TIDAL creates numerous opportunities for artists to connect with their fans in a more intentional way.

Finally, TIDAL integrates with DJ software like Serato and rekordbox, making its catalog accessible to DJs who use the platform during live sets, mixes, and events.

Whether you're focused on sound quality, exposure, or building a deeper artist presence, TIDAL offers tools worth exploring.

How to Set Up TIDAL For Artists

To set up your TIDAL for Artists profile, head to artists.tidal.com and sign in with the email connected to your distributor or the one you use for your music releases. From there, you can search for your TIDAL artist profile and request access.

Once verified, you’ll be able to claim your profile, update your artist image, pitch upcoming releases, and view basic streaming insights. If you release music through an official distributor, you’ll also be able to access your royalty data and make sure your tracks are reaching TIDAL through the right channels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, but not without a major limitation.

In 2025, TIDAL began rolling out a Direct Upload feature in early access via the TIDAL app. With this feature, you can upload your tracks to the platform (MP3, FLAC, WAV, etc.), edit metadata, and share them privately or publicly.

But here’s the catch: if you upload your tracks on your own, you won’t be able to access your royalties.

That’s because payouts can only be collected from music uploaded through an official distributor like iMusician, which makes it eligible for monetization. When you release your music this way, it’s automatically registered and tracked for royalty payments across platforms like TIDAL.

In 2025, TIDAL pays around $0.012 to $0.013 per stream, making it one of the highest-paying streaming platforms. The exact amount can vary depending on different factors, including the terms and conditions of your distributor or where your fans are located, but it's still well above what most platforms pay.

At that rate, you'd need roughly:

  • 85 streams to earn $1

  • 850 streams to earn $10

  • 8,500 streams to earn $100
